Inspiration often strikes at random times. For Neon Trees, it struck the last night of their tour with Duran Duran.

In their latest behind-the-scenes video of the making of new album Picture Show, the band revealed how three of their tracks came about.

“Our final show with Duran Duran we were in the dressing room,” Branden Campbell said when frontman Tyler Glenn came to the rest of the band with an idea for “Trust.”

One of the more relatable songs, Glenn said he thinks it’s something many fans can relate to.

“To me, I think it’s one of the more emotional songs. It’s so resonant, just the subject of trust and the real sadness that comes with mistrust and it sounds like that,” he said. “It really does sound like losing touch with a friend. It sounds like a breakup. It sounds like a relationship falling apart.”

Sometimes songs don’t always go as planned. Neon Trees discussed the several rewrites of “Weekend.”

“We had a CD of nine versions of this song,” Glenn confessed. “All written by us, but we had just tried so hard to make it something that we would be proud of.”

“We always knew that there were elements that were catchy, there were reasons we kept on coming back to it but we just couldn’t make it acceptable,” Elaine Bradley added.

Chris Allen admitted that it seemed like a hit song for another artist, but not themselves.

“It’s about a wallflower dude that can’t get the girl that he likes but on the weekend he pretends and makes up this complete fantasy,” Glenn said of the track.

While the band typically works together on their material they enlisted the help of Kaskade for “Lessons In Love.”

“I originally wanted it to be really Depeche Mode-y but it really took on another sort of dark Thriller era Michael Jackson,” Glenn said. “It’s got a cool, dark, wallflower in the club dark mentality.”
