When Frank Ocean came out on Tumblr with a story about a love affair he once had with a man, celebrities and fans alike showed their support. But could it have all been so easy? The singer recently revealed the thought behind the coming-out letter and the fall-out that ensued.

“The night I posted it, I cried like a f**king baby,” he told GQ, as part of the magazine’s “Men Of The Year” package. “It was like all the frequency just clicked to a change in my head. All the receptors were now receiving a different signal, and I was happy. I hadn’t been happy in so long. I’ve been sad again since, but it’s a totally different take on sad. There’s just some magic in truth and honesty and openness.”

When asked if he consideres himself bisexual now, Ocean said he sees his sexuality as more complicated than one or the other (or both).  

“I’ll respectfully say that life is dynamic and comes along with dynamic experiences,” he said, “and the same sentiment that I have towards genres of music, I have towards a lot of labels and boxes and s**t. I’m in this business to be creative—I’ll even diminish it and say to be a content provider. One of the pieces of content that I’m for f**k sure not giving is porn videos. I’m not a centerfold. I’m not trying to sell you sex.”

Aside from all the talk about his sexuality, Ocean also mentioned several projects on deck, which include songs for Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film Django Unchained, as well as records for his third album. Fans will also be happy to know that he is thinking of a European tour that he plans to model after Pink Floyd’s The Wall tour from 1980.
