Natalie Portman as ‘Jackie’ is Chilling

By Evonne Ermey

Many people look back on Camelot as a golden age in American politics, a fairy tale, but let’s not forget that most fairy tales have a dark and gruesome underbelly.

The newly released trailer for Jackie, starring Natalie Portman is a subtle reminder of that. Soft focused, highly stylized and flirting with darkness, The Black Swan vibes emanating from Portman’s pill box hat give us the heebie jeebies. And, let’s face it, we all know how the fairy tale of Camelot Americana ends, right?

In the film Jackie, we start with the end.

The film is a “psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband’s legacy,” says Fox Searchlight in their summary of the trailer.

Jackie Onassis herself is not Camelot, she is merely a piece of the overall majesty, and Portman, swaddled in vintage Chanel, is the perfect portal to the famous First Lady.

Received at the Venice Film Festival last month, Jackie travels stateside with Oscar murmurs in tow for Portman.

The film, brought to life by Chilean director by Pablo Larrain, will open in select theaters December 2.
