Charli XCX proves why you should always check your DMs with her newest song “After the Afterparty” featuring Lil Yachty. It turns out she direct messaged the rapper about collaborating after learning he liked her 2014 album Sucker.
The two keep it going all night with their latest track, which appears on Charli’s upcoming studio album. She has yet to share the name or official release date for that project. “After the afterparty/ We’re gonna keep it going/ We’ve going to rev it up/ The neighbors might complain,” Charli sings on the chorus, her voice inflecting the last syllable of each word to create a sing-song quality.
Lil Yachty comes in toward the end. “The party was so crazy/ The party was so crazy/ Tomorrow I’ll be lazy/ But I’ll spend it with ya, baby,” he raps in the last part of his verse with a touch of auto tune to turn his rhymes into something more melodic.
Charli said she’d heard some people criticized Lil Yachty for the way he rapped, but that’s all the more reason why she wanted to work with him and so reached out via DM. “We’re not in a time where rappers are all about having the best all time flow, or that old school flow,” she said. “I love the way that he raps but I also love the way that he presents himself in his videos and that he’s this creative force” (via SPIN).
